In a pivotal Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup between two rivals with the Anchor Bone Trophey awaiting the victor, the Bulldogs were all bite on offense and just as stingy on defense en route toe a 42-17 victory. Bulldog junior quarterback and Harlon Hill Award hopeful Jason Vander Laan was as good as advertised and then some going 19-28 passing for 215 yards & 4 TDs while also leading the team in rushing with 28 carries for 158 net yards. Bulldogs wide receiver Shakur Sanders was the recipient of 3 of Vander Laan's 4 throwing scores. The Lakers could not stop the junior signal-caller and were without their own starting quarterback Heath Parling. Backup quarterback Isaiah Grimes was 14-34 for 199 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT but the Bulldogs were without equal offensively "finish[ing] with 496 total yards of offense, 200 more than GVSU" (Bushen, 2014). A rowdy and ready crowd of an announced 5869 fans at Top Taggart Field braved some rain before fall skies and sunshine arrived to help them cheer on their Bulldogs as drown out the loyal following in the visitors section that attended from Grand Valley State just about an hour south of town.
The Laker defense tried to keep the team in the game, getting a Marquez Gollman interception of Vander Laan and a Deonté Hurst Sack. The Lakers defense was paced by junior linebacker Brad Horling and redshirt junior defensive lineman Matt Judon both with 12 tackles.
The Lakers (0-3) will try to bounce back and earn their first win this week at home versus Lake Erie College (1-2) while the Bulldogs (3-0) hope to maintain their winning ways and lead the GLIAC as they travel to University Center to square off with the Saginaw Valley State (MI) Cardinals (0-3).
