A lot of the issues regarding fundraising in sport are foreign to me. I have never worked in an environment that required it. Therefore, any breakthroughs in the technology of sport fundraising are justifiably foreign to me as well. But when I read a recent article about Check In For Good joining forces with Bonzi to make such a thing easier for smaller sport & recreation organizations, I was pretty impressed. I learned that Check-in for Good is a "a digital crowd funding and location based advertising application" (2014, February 24) and Bonzi is "an online management and registration software for youth and adult sports leagues" (2014, February 24). Think of this like a kickstarter for something or someone local and realistic. "The integration of Check-in for Good to the Bonzi platform will give sports organizations a simple way to raise money digitally, along with valuable resources to jump-start their fundraising campaigns. Users will have the ability to set up a team page at checkinforgood.com/bonzi where they can collect donations through a widget on their team desktop and instantly share their campaign through their social networks" (2014, February 24). That easy-to-use sort of technology is exactly what groups and organizations like a small athletic department, youth league, or the like could use easily to drive donations.
Another utility, VIE Sports Inc.’s recently launched, gamified social (giving) platform VIE Connect™, is helping a charitable organization in Oakland, CA better gain funding and donations for a golf-athon. The First Tee of Oakland's Golf For our Future event was in need of greater reach with its requests for donations so it turned to the new platform which makes use of all the most common and popular social medias. But the technology offers a unique twist that should increase involvement. In typical golf charity events, players play all at once on the same day. However, "Through utilization of VIE’s proprietary Athon technology, combining competition and Athon-type pledging, this year’s Golf for Our Future event is from January 27th through February 16th. Golfers participate by playing at Metro on any day at anytime within the set timeframe. Golfers play, post scores and seek donation pledges from friends and family to support The First Tee of Oakland. Scores are adjusted for course difficulty and the golfer’s course handicap. A Leaderboard presents the competition and fundraising results crowning a Low Net VIE score champion and Top-Fundraiser champion. The VIE Connect™ platform and proprietary GolfAthon technology has facilitated The First Tee of Oakland to have an outreach to all golfers who play Metro as the event is not limited to one specific day and time. The Golf for Our Future fundraising event will empower The First Tee of Oakland to dramatically increase the number of participants, thus the funds raised for this worthy cause" (2014). This is of course all for a worthy cause. The First Tee of Oakland "is not just a golf program. It is a youth development program that positively impacts the lives of young people by offering research-based curriculum centered on life skills, core values and healthy choices taught through the game of golf" (2014).
